Some notes on Back Up Iron Sights (BUIS).

First, be sure your sight has TRITIUM.  If your primary optic fails in the dark, you will not bet able to see your iron sights, and your weapon will become nearly useless.  Having a tritium option is near the top of my “must have” requirements for BUIS.

Secondly, be sure to buy a foldable sight, as foldable sights allow you to fold the sights out of the way giving you a completely unimpeded view of the target.  Fixed lower 1/3 BUIS obstruct the entire lower 1/3 of the target.  The difference must really be seen to be appreciated.  Some like the idea of having the iron sights visible all the time for the very rare occasion when your primary optic fails, allowing you to quickly transition my moving your head down to pick up the lower iron sights.  I would counter that it is foolish to reduce your ability to see the target 99.9% of time for the 0.1% of the time that such a failure may occur.  The only loss with foldable sights is the very short amount of time it takes to flip your sights up…generally not much longer than reloading.  Additionally, lower 1/3 co-witness sights require a change in head position to move from the optic to the lower BUIS.  If you train a lot, a change of head position can slow your ability to line your sights up each time you bring your weapon up into the firing position.  Muscle memory is strong…it is much better have your optical plane in the same place for both of your aiming devices (red dot sight and BUIS).  Foldable absolute co-witness sights allow the shooter to keep the same cheek weld/head position when shooting no matter which sight you are using.  Foldable sights also ensure that your sights are more protected in the folded position than fixed sights.  In the folded position, they lie parallel against the receiver, where they are much less likely to be broken or damaged.  They are also less likely to snap on clothing or vegetation.

Our preference is the Troy SSIG-IQR-STBT-00, particularly when used with an Aimpoint T-1 on piston uppers (such as the HK 416 or MR556).  Troy BattleSights set the world standard for performance and durability. Troy has developed a rugged low-profile sight designed for firearms with top rails higher than the standard M4. For shooters who favor a sightline that’s as close to the barrel as possible, or for those with raised top rail systems, the Troy Micro BattleSight provides an ideal solution.  This sight works perfectly with the HK 416/MR556 family of rifles.  The line of sight is about the same as the factory HK sights (just 1/8” lower than factory).  The sight works extremely well when combined with an Aimpoint T-1 on a 30mm spacer and Quick Release Mount.
